The V-42 is based on the Fairbairn Sykes Commando style fighting knife and was designed by officers of the Devils Brigade and their Commander, Colonel Robert T Frederick. During WWII this knife was issued to members of the unit and were made up of U.S. and Canadian Armed Forces.

The Fairbairn Sykes Commando Dagger is a double-edged fighting knife developed by William Ewart Fairbairn and Eric Anthony Sykes in 1941. The Fox Knives model features 3 variants. Walnut handle and oxidized blade, Walnut handle and Chrome Blade and PVD handle and Oxidized blade. The Fairbairn Sykes Dagger can be seen throughout the Special Operations community on various insignias and logos worn and used by Green Berets and other Special Operations units.
